Alexis M.
Alexis M. recently graduated with her Master’s Degree in Viola Performance from Mannes School of Music in NYC with a full scholarship, studying with Daniel Panner. She completed her undergraduate schooling early at Oberlin Conservatory, graduating in 3.5 years with her Bachelor’s Degree in Viola Performance, as well as a minor in GSFS, studying with Kirsten Docter. She is originally from Houston, Texas and began her studies with Teresa Han from the age of 12, starting on piano from the age of 8 for about 9-10 years. She has served as principal violist of the Oberlin Orchestra, Oberlin Chamber Orchestra, Oberlin Sinfonietta, Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble, Mannes MACE ensemble, and Chautauqua Music Festival Orchestra. She has served as a substitute violist of the Firelands Symphony Orchestra, as well as Denver Philharmonic. Alexis recently attended the National Repertory Orchestra Music Festival as a section violist and associate principal violist. Alongside performing, she has taught viola, violin, and piano for several places in different communities, such as Oberlin Arts & Sciences Orchestra, Northern Ohio Youth Orchestra, Outschool.com, Chautauqua Institution, and she has taught in person in 2 locations in NYC: Anselmo Academy & City Strings, along with one location in Washington D.C. She is very passionate about both performing and teaching, and she believes that music can be a tool utilized for the expression of one’s soul. During her time in NYC, she also played in a flute, viola, harp trio called the Village Trio that placed second in the Charleston Winter Music Competition, and she was the librarian and violist for a nonprofit, student-led chamber ensemble that performed in various locations throughout NYC & NJ: Westside Chamber Players. Alexis has just made a move back to Houston and is excited to begin working with students. In her free time, Alexis loves to bake and watch Studio Ghibli movies.
