Whether you're anchoring a rock band or just discovering the low end, our instructors build every lesson around your goals — no prior experience required.
The electric bass guitar was introduced in the 1930s. Since the 1950s, it has essentially taken the place of the orchestral double bass in popular music. Alongside the electric guitar, the bass became ever more prominent as Rock and various other forms of contemporary popular music started to rely on its warm and powerful sound.
Bass Sizes and Types
The bass is available in two sizes, standard (long-scale) and short-scale. This gives students some flexibility in choosing the size that fits them best.
Bass players also get to choose between solid-body basses and semi-hollow basses, which offer a combination of traditional acoustic and electronic tone production.

The bass guitar is larger, with a longer neck and typically four thick strings tuned an octave below a standard guitar's lowest strings. It focuses on rhythm and low-end groove rather than chords and melody, and always requires amplification to be heard.

Because of its size, bass is usually best suited to students around age 9 or older, though a short-scale bass can make it accessible earlier. Ask your instructor for a personalized recommendation.
