Drum Lessons in Houston
The drum is a percussion instrument. It produces a sound when the drum membrane (the drum head) is struck by the drummer’s hand or with an object–a mallet or drum stick.
“Drums” usually refers to a drum set or drum kit, which includes a group of different-sized drums–a snare drum, bass drum (played by a foot pedal), toms, a hi-hat (two cymbals on a stand), and one or more additional cymbals.
Brief History and Uses of the Drum
The drum is ancient, at least 5,000 years old (yes!). Over the course of its history, drums have been used not only as a musical instrument but among others, as a means of communication; as an element of religious ceremonies; for military purposes; and as a music therapy tool.
Types of Drum Set
The drum set comes in two basic varieties–acoustic and electronic. The traditional acoustic drum set produces sound acoustically, featuring all drum set components in their acoustic form. In contrast, the electronic drum creates sound electronically. Players of electronic drum sets generate sound by hitting special sound pads that are connected with a keyboard amplifier or PA sound system.
Since the electronic drum set offers great control over sound volume, it can be a great choice for small performance venues and for students to practice drums at home.
