In the orchestral strings family, the cello plays the tenor part. As such, its normal register lies between the (lower) double bass and the (higher) viola (alto). But many have compared the total melodic range and sound of the cello to that of the human voice. This may explain why cello music is so incredibly expressive, touching our deepest emotions.
As an orchestral instrument, the cello has been important from the Baroque period through modern times. But in addition to that, there also is much music that features the cello as a solo instrument, highlighting its great versatility and broad range of musical expression.
